 Sailing Section

Good news from our Schull contingent - Charlie Butterworth got 2nd overall in the Gold Fleet of Lasers, followed in 3rd overall by Jonathan Flood. Also, on the first day, Garret Kinnane achieved 3 1sts in the Bronze Fleet - well done guys.

Junior Training is up and running with c.60 trainees spread over 4 weeks of August. We have had to hire Joe Kavanaghs field to facilitate the extra numbers - proof that sailing is on the increase amongst our younger folk.

Man Overboard (MOB) training was held on Saturday 30th June by 3 Training Skippers, Henrik Heckman, Gerry Haughton and Charlie Kavanagh, in 2 hands-on sessions with also a demonstration of Recovery of Man Overboard (Ivan Alcorn)techniques.  Each skipper will then in turn be expected to perform a number of drills on his/her own boat and a mandatory drill is to be performed on Monday 6th August during the RNLI Pennant - in which our cruising skippers are encouraged to participate also (entry fee goes to the RNLI). Only 12 boats were represented on the day, with 15 boats a no show - remember that you might only have 1 or 2 minutes before losing sight of your casualty - are you confident your crew can get back to you?

After the RNLI Pennant Race, on Mon 6th, there will be a Blessing of the Boats from the Rowing Club beach c.4pm, before the Senior Rowing Race - all boats are encouraged to dress up (for Festival duration) and have crew aboard for the blessing.

Our Juniors have proposed to organise (with help from the adults) a Junior Open Dinghy Regatta on Sat 25th August, to coincide with the end of Junior Training - this event is being sponsored by www.islandmaritime.com  (Simon Greenwood).

Junior Training will run throughout the month of August, final date for booking is 1st June 2007 - its always popular and the wise thing to do is book early. Check this link for more details.

A word of caution - as the crash boat (launch) is currently very stiff on a cold start, it would be prudent to have 2 persons available when starting it.

It is proposed to run Powerboat Training L1&2 on Sat/Sun 18/19th Aug and again  on Sat/Sun 22/23 Sept for our sailors - Sean Flood/Olivia Flahive are taking names.

Our Portmadoc trip has been changed to the mid weekend in July - owners will be looking for crew, if you can arrange the time off. For those who can afford the time, we also hope to incorporate a visit to our friends in the RWYC in Caernarfon, before continuing on down to Portmadoc. Thanks to Interreg, we have a Twinning Grant of €500 from The Irish Sea Marine Sector to put towards some of our berthing and other expenses on our annual trip. A new Twinning plaque will be furnished to mark the occasion.

Our major event in 2007 is the South East Cruiser Regatta and all hands will be required to assist, where practical. Big news - a sponsor has come on board - see above right. We launched the Conwayport SE Regatta on Fri 29th June at 8.30pm. We will be looking for volunteers shortly to help with various roles - house, bbq, berthing, marks, RIBs, etc - please let Charlie, Barry or Henrik know if you are available.

Model Yachters - dust down your 1m boats and have them ready for battle at 4pm on Sat 4th at the slip.

Club News

Our immediate Past President, Sean Mc Devitt and his good lady wife, Philomena, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family, friends and members last Saturday night 16th June. Well done to the Golden couple and wishing them many more happy years together - a shining example to us all.

Our doors are back in situ and were well worth the wait - well done Kevin and Derek. Our Round Ireland room is looking resplendent and again Kevin, Jim and others are to be thanked.

The Club bar is now open 6 days a week (Tues to Sun - from 8.30pm during the week). If there is demand and suitable volunteers to man it, Gerry will open Mondays also until end of August - your call.

Sean Flood was successful in applying for a Community Grant from the Local Authority in the amount of €500 - hopefully to go towards improving safety and access to sailing in Wicklow SC. Well done Sean.

Michael Mulvihills parents, Gerry and Shirley, celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss in WSC on Tues 18th July with a lively bunch of family, friends and visiting sailors (Ocean Phoenix made it up in time from Kilmore Quay). It was an emotional night for Shirley as she was reunited with members of her step-family who travelled from England for the celebrations. Congratulations folks.

Broadside hit on Skua - one of many such on the day

Have a look at some images, taken by Frank Murphy, of the trauma 12 of our club boats were put through by their owners not paying due respect to a Met Eireann NE Gale warning. Please respect the power of the sea and do not ignore such well flagged warnings in future - the Harbourmaster will accommodate all boats within operational requirements.
