60.30.2010 - Wicklow Sailing Club is celebrating 60 years as a club and 30 years of its Round Ireland in 2010.

Conway Media Round Ireland 2010

Kevin Desmond

Everybody in Wicklow Sailing Club wishes Kevin well and looks forward to seeing him about again in the not too distant future.

  RACING ROUND IRELAND

Book launch in Wicklow Sailing Club Thursday 17th June at 20:00 hrs. Fred Drew will be introducing his book on the Round Ireland to an innocent and unsuspecting audience. Bring Money!

Conway Media Round Ireland

The 2010 Conway Media Round Ireland Yacht Race was officially launched in Wicklow Town Hall on Mon 24th May to a packed house. Roy Conway spoke glowingly of the value of the Race to the town of Wicklow and was delighted to be able to play his part in making the event happen. The Round Ireland SailFest is also being sponsored by Conway Media and it was also officially launched on the night. All in all, it promises to make for a very entertaining weekend in Wicklow and hopefully we will enjoy a mini Galway type event for everyone in the club and town to benefit from.

Listen to the Pat Kenny Show Round Ireland and Festival interviews on Weds 26th May - http://www.rte.ie/radio/podcast/radio1.html - scroll down to Today with Pat Kenny and search for Round Ireland link.

Facebook - we have a Round Ireland Yacht Race page on Facebook and you might like to add your support by becoming a "friend". See News blog - Blind sailor Mark Pollock to do 2 Handed race. Entries are now up to 30 and hopefully, we will have close to 40 boats on the start line.

30 years on - check out these souvenirs from the 1980 Round Ireland, thanks to John hall and Afloat magazine.

ISORA 2010

What an ISORA the Commodore is!

Wicklow SC was due to finish an ISORA race on the June Bank Holiday - unfortunately, 14 boats started and only 2 finished after 4am Sunday, with 12 retirals due to lack of wind. Sadie had her team of helpers on standby and a dedicated few boats motored over to get to the bar - well done lads and lassies - pity about the flimsy rain gear!

 Round Ireland Sail Fest

Come on down to Wicklow Town.  There is a very active Committee under Pascal Burke and your WSC representatives are Charlie Kavanagh and Mick Nolan, with club members Fiona Downes and David O Gorman representing other groups.  So far, we have arranged Free Music (Garda Band, American Drifters & Luan Parle etc) around the town for each evening, WSC will host the Sailors Party, the Gaol will host a Mardi Gras ball, Wicklows Finest Food, Fashion and Flowers, a Period Pageant (4 shows), Classic Cars, Fireworks, kids bits, music in the pubs and loads of other attractive events to entertain visitors and locals alike. We will be playing our part by arranging music around the club, putting on sailing, model and jet ski etc type activity as well as the Big One on Sunday.

Civils Dinner 2010

Civils prepare to be piped in for dinner   Big thanks to our hospitality crew

During the last weekend of May, the members of  the Civil Engineers Sailing Society held their 23rd Annual  Dinner at Wicklow Sailing Club. With a BBQ and informal gathering on Friday evening and then a Formal Dinner for 40 persons on Saturday evening, the House Committee and Volunteer Club Members had their work 'cut out'. We are extremely grateful to all those involved for making this event such a success. The Dinner especially was to a very high standard and enjoyed by all the guests.  WSC is famous for it's hospitality and this weekend enforced that point. Thanks once again to, the Commodore, House Committee, Volunteer Members and not least to 'the barmaid with the most flexible watch', Kerry, for another memorable visit to a special club.

Peter Rowland - see letter from Tom Jessop to Peter re Civils and more complimentary cards also received.

WSC Flag and Irish Flag

If anyone knows of the whereabouts of our Club Flags, could they ensure that they are returned to the Club asap, please. All Club equipment should be signed out/in and permission sought from the relevant authorised person.

WSC 60th Birthday Party

Presidents all three  Happy Birthday Frank & Sadie

Our latest event on Sat 15th May 8.30pm to celebrate our 60 years as a club was timed to coincide with the 60th birthdays in May of fellow members Sadie Phelan, Frank Murphy and Frank Jackson. There were some nibbles and  music for our members to help enjoy a convivial evening celebrating our big birthday. We had a good turnout despite it also being lift in day and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.

Tom Delahunt RIP

Former Trustee and President, Tom Delahunt, passed away after a long illness and we extend our condolences to Syl and his sisters at this sad time. Tom was a major figure in the business, political and social life of Wicklow and a long time active member of Wicklow Sailing Club. He was a member of the first WSC Committee and a another valuable link with our origins has passed on. May he rest in peace.

Teresa O Gorman RIP

Our condolences go to David O Gorman and his family on the recent passing of his mother. May she rest in peace.

The Late Danny Cleary

Hi we are looking for any photos of our late Uncle Danny Cleary during his time in the Wicklow Sailing Club. The Sailing Club was particularly one of his passions in life following his retirement from being away at sea since an early age. We have many happy memories of being there with him in the clubhouse; and want to show our children (who sadly never got to meet him) any photos that might be floating round in your archives at the club.  Whilst we are living abroad we like to have a look on your website from time to time just to keep up with the news especially around the Regatta Time.  We would be grateful for any thing you can find.

Many Thanks

THEFT OF OUTBOARD MOTORS

The ISA would like to make owners and club of such motors aware that there has been a number of outboard engines stolen in the South East Region - most recently off the Arklow SC RIB in mid April.

      Next WSC Committee meeting:-

Fri 11th June 2010

Tues 25th May - Gerard Haughton was welcomed to Committee as the acting Rear Commodore Sail. A Boatowners meeting is to be held on Wed 26th to discuss various matters relating to the Cruiser section. The Sailing Section have been tasked to make plans for a new/extended boat park and set up a steering group. House has a busy schedule with plenty of activity right up to the Round Ireland. The Round Ireland is now top of the agenda and all the heads of areas of responsibility will be putting their teams together shortly.
