South East Regatta in Arklow Well, it may be a shrinking event but Wicklow still holds the key to overall success - another successful raid on Arklow by our Class 2 Fleet - well done guys 'n gals. Yet again we bring home (and retain) the South East Overall Club Trophy. See ISA snippet of info - http://www.sailing.ie/news/newsDetails.asp?id=2312 Meanwhile back at the ranch, Kerrie was holding the fort with visitors from all points of the compass, including 10 boats from Skerries SC - the bar takings were probably better than those achieved in Arklow. Another major vote of thanks to our ever dependable and friendly Bar Manageress on a busy Bank Holiday weekend. Will our new Wicklow Sailing Regatta come into being in 2009 to compliment Irelands' longest continuously running Festival? Move over South East Regatta - watch this space! WSC Schullers A tradition started back 15 years or so ago has become a fixture on the summer calendar for our Junior sailors and their parents - yes, its the Schull Schools International Regatta. Yet again, Garret Kinnane has flown the flag for WSC, getting 3rd place in the Gold Fleet - well done to all who made the journey - you do your club proud. Sea Stallion of Glendalough With a deadline of 9th Aug to be back in Roskilde, where a massive welcome home awaits them, our adopted Viking crew are hoping the weather behaves for their last few days on their return journey. Round Ireland 2008 - a major success John Johnson, Dennis Noonan, Sean Flood and Henrik Heckmann and their respective teams of eager beavers delivered a wonderful event this year despite the adverse weather and lack of auxilliary sponsors and have maintained the high standards set in the previous race. The major success story was the new tracking system which brought our flagship event into homes across the planet and gave Wicklow Sailing Club a huge lift in its already well regarded international reputation. BMW have reaped the rewards for the efforts of a small band of volunteers and must be very pleased with the publicity achieved through our websites. We wish Evelyn Noonan well after her recent turn.

Round Ireland -Final Results available on our WSC and Race websites Upcoming Events Any ideas for Social Events in 2008 welcome Junior Training 4 weeks - Aug 08 Fireball Championship Aug 30/31 BMW Round Ireland Prizegiving Nov 1st Grand Hotel Please play your part and be involved - can you run an event? Don't forget us if you have a celebration in your family, work or socially - let Sean or Kerry know. Catherine Malone is helping out with Entertainments - can you assist her efforts? Wicklow Olympians As a sporting organisation situated in Wicklow Town, we have been very ungracious in supporting other local sportspersons in their moment of triumph - what did your club do to acknowledge the Double All Ireland U-16 & 18 successes by WRFC, even though 7 or 8 of their panel are involved in our own club? Lets hope there is a more generous attitude for the endeavours in Beijing of local athletes Roisin Mc Gettigan, Fionnuala Britton and even Delgany based Tim Goodbody (sailing in the Finn class). We wish them well as they take on the Worlds finest. National Sports Capital Funding Renovation Issues Our Committee passed, at reasonably short notice, the Club renovation proposals in early May so that all works could be completed in time for the Round Ireland. Unfortunately, one element was not thoroughly investigated - the new MDF covered wall - and has not been passed by the County Fire Officer. When our Commodore returns from his well earned rest in Portugal, after a hectic 6 months (esp. the last 2), consultations will be conducted with Fire Safety experts to see if we have a case to make (or not!). In the meantime, good counsel should prevail and matters allowed to take their course in the normal way - our club consists of well meaning volunteers, whose numbers are shrinking year on year, making it harder to get things done by our own endeavours as previous members often did. Like all other concerned members, your correspondent looks forward to the return of all our club pictures, paintings, knot box, burgees and other intrinsic memorabilia to bring back the true character of our club and its relationship with the world around us. Lets hope wise heads prevail and all these contentious issues can be resolved amicably by our well meaning members. Dept. of Transport Ships Registration Consultation Any boat owners or intending boat owners should take a look at the Departments consultation document which is destined to be law in the not too distant future. It will affect all vessels greater than 7m LOA (and some below) and will pose technical and financial difficulties no doubt for owners in trying to comply with various aspects of their requirements. For older boats, how many will have Builders Certificates? If you have any queries or views on the issues raised in the document, raise them asap with the mandarins in the Department. Where has our Dept. of Marine gone to? Check it out here http://www.vesselregister.ie/english On the road to recovery Some of our members have been in the "wars" recently and we all wish Evelyn Noonan, Arthur Ingram and Norma Drew a speedy recovery from their set backs. We had a visit recently from one of Wicklow Sailing Clubs greatest friends - David Wilding of the RWYC and his merry crew aboard Ocean Phoenix. He was met on the East Pier by Sean and Jonathon Flood with a bottle of Champagne and his crews eyes popped at the superb welcome afforded to them. Kerry followed up with a fine spread of nibbles washed down in good company by many of Davids Wicklow buddies. He is on the Chemo warpath for the 3rd time against the Big C and all his friends in WSC wish him a speedy recovery. Condolences We are sorry to report the passing of Arthur Ingrams mother, at the fine age of 96. May she rest in peace. Next WSC Committee meeting:- Friday 25th July 2008 8.30pm With the Round Ireland successfully put to bed for another year, your Committee, with newly installed Acting Rear Commodore Sail Henrik Heckmann in situ, will be turning its eyes to the job of finishing the Clubhouse renovations and refurbishment. Rear Commodore Sail Your correspondent took the highly unpopular decision to stand down from the role of Rear Commodore Sail only a short while before the Round Ireland due to pressure on several fronts including exams, work, Government regulations and unfortunate interference in dealings with Wicklow Port Company regarding my river berth. Into the breach has stepped Henrik Heckmann as Acting RC Sail having cut his teeth in successfully organising the Cruiser racing section in 2007. We wish him well in his new role. |
